The incident took place in New Haven around 7:55 a.m., Saturday, April 1 in the area of Winthrop Avenue and Goffe Terrace.
Officers responded to the area after receiving calls of nine gunshots being fired and located two men in a parked Acura MDX mid-block on Winthrop Avenue, said Capt. Rose Dell, of the New Haven Police.
The driver, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead on the scene.
The passenger was taken by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted, Dell said.
He has been identified as 27-year-old Jonathan Garcia of New Haven.
Detectives from the department’s Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification collected evidence on the scene, which included the seizure of a firearm.
Investigators arrested a person of interest, who is currently on parole, and are working with the State’s Attorney’s Office on significant leads in the case, Dell said.
"Both victims appear to have been targeted in this incident, and there is no threat to the general public," Dell said.
Chief Jacobson praised the quick and skillful work of responding officers and detectives that have led to many developments in this investigation.
“I detest this senseless loss of life through gun violence. Although we are unable to prevent all crimes, we will devote every resource necessary to bring justice to the victim’s families," Jacobson said.
